My Journey / Joe Van Deuren

Learning from injury

June 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

perseveranceFor the last week or so I have been dealing first with just discomfort and then “I can hardly walk”, injury in the hip / groin area.  In dealing with this I have to remember the reminder we have received from Tom Callos so many times that if you have an injury or you cannot do something – improvise -  find something else you can do and keep moving forward.

So in dealing with my hip / groin it just was not possible to kick and in fact I was having a hard time just moving around.  But on Tuesday night I decided to do some sparring with hands only – no kicking.  We did 4 or 5 rounds in and it was a learning experience.  I have not done that in a long time and I got to practice footwork and blocking with real focus.  I am looking forward to this sort of practice again and then seeing how it will help my regular sparring.

This is just a reminder to persevere and keep trying new things till you find something that does work for you.
