Walk in pure woods

July 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

On Thursday of this week the team and I took an hour or so walk in some very pristine woods.  It was an area not touched by humans.  One with tree frogs and box turtles and yet still hurt by some invasive plants blown in from somewhere.  It was beautiful to see the water and lillies.  The dams built by beaver and listen to the birds singing even at 11 AM in the morning and hearing frogs that I have never heard before.

We saw a giant blue heron flying around.  It was peaceful.  What does this have to do with martial arts and self defense.  I believe that the more aware we are of our surroundings and the impact we have on them the safer we will be on so many levels.  It is so important for us to have some time to walk and think – or not think – just to be in that one moment.  Even with others with us on this trip it was a time for being in that one moment.

I have to thank our guide for the morning, Janet Norman, with the Fish & Wildlife division of the the Department of Natural Resources.  She did a great job of leading us through this walk and explaining the work being done in the County to save green space and to create large continuous forest for all those animals that must have that type of environment – or just not exist anymore.  She has also tome me she will post some other great places to go in the County for families.  We are planning another hike near Annapolis very soon.  If you would like to go along contact me for details.

One final note, we may have some photos later.  I thought my camera was ready and as it turns out I forgot to place the newly charged battery back in the camera.  I carried it the whole time and got no photos.  Sorry.
